During the regular MWP-ISD School Board meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 17, Board Trustees recognized students that advanced past the district level in sports competition.  Those recognized include the Monahans High School varsity girl’s volleyball team, varsity football team and girl’s cross country team.

In his superintendent’s report, Keith Richardson said enrollment is up to 1,983,33 up from this time last year, and down six from last month.  Richardson stated the District would look at the 22:1 ratio in lower grade levels after Christmas.  Lower grade levels are gaining more students than junior high and high school.

In a construction report by Richardson, Tatom is close to being finished with a tentative move-in date for teachers for the weekend of Jan. 16-19.  With Jan. 19 being a school holiday, teachers will have an extra day to set up classrooms.

Construction will begin on the high school during the Christmas holiday with the fence in the back parking lot being installed.  Actual construction on the school will being after the holidays.

Baseball field construction should be finished by mid-January.  Setting up the bleachers, painting and installing nets on the backstop are still incomplete.

Richardson reported engineers have come over to look at HVAC items that need to be done at Monahans Education Center, junior high and the special education building.  According to Richardson, these are remodeling projects, and buildings will not have to be torn down. The District expects these projects to be completed this summer.

Board President Bo Rose reported that all school board members have completed required board training.

The board reviewed updated legal policies and acted upon by approving local policies of TASB.  Those policies BJCF Superintendent-Renewal, CDA Other Revenues Investments, CE Annual Operating Budget, CI  School Properties Disposal, CNA Transportation Management Student Transportation, DFBB Term Contracts-Nonrenewal, EEH Instructional Arrangements-Homebound Instruction, FDB Admissions-Intradistrict Transfers and Classrooms, Assignments, FNCE Student Conduct-Telecommunication/ Electronic Devices.  Richardson added these polices are online and anyone can go online to view these policies.

The Board accepted bids for three property sales.  A bid of $100 was accepted from Rosalva Garcia for property at 604 N. Allen.  Garcia stated plans to use the property for residential purposes.  A bid of $2,000 was submitted by Jeff Swanger for property at 100 N. Betty.  The Board also approved a bid from Jeff Swanger of $1,000 for property at 211 W. “A” Street.  Swanger plans to use properties for residential purposes.

In other business, the Board discussed the probability of needing four additional classrooms at Sudderth Elementary.  It was not an action item from the Board, rather a discussion item for the Board to consider in the future.

The Board accepted changing the May 8th bad weather day now on the schedule to May 15th.

The Board voted to approve previous meeting minutes and postponed hearing principal goals from Monahans High School, Monahans Education Center and Edwards Elementary and postponed Superintendent Evaluation and Contract Renewal because two board members were not present.

Those present at the meeting included Trustees Bobby Almanza, Raymond Reyes, Donna Garcia and Bill Clayton.  Also present was Superintendent Keith Richardson and Board President Bo Rose.

Results of TAKS tests were revealed and will be printed in the next edition of The News.
