On Saturday, Dec. 8,
several Big Green Band students auditioned at the Association of Texas Small
School Bands Region Band tryouts in Greenwood. The region is made up of 30
schools in the area.
Eighteen students from Monahans were selected to the region band, and nine placed high enough to attend the Area Contest.
The Area level auditions were held on Saturday, Jan. 5 and included all the students that advanced from the regions surrounding Amarillo, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, and El Paso. Out of the thousands of students involved in the competition from the beginning, few advance to the All-State Band this year. Those students from Monahans were selected to ATSSB All-State Band this year. Those students are senior, Chip Reyes; senior, Chris Garcia; sophomore, Bobby Fabian and sophomore Jeremy Durr. This is Fabian's second year to earn this honor. Reyes and Garcia have made the All-State band three consecutive years, which has earned them two scholarships from ATSSB. These scholarships will be presented to both students at the All-State Band Concert, which will be held on February 16th in San Antonio at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center beginning at 3:30 pm.
