The Lobo Baseball team competed in the Greenwood Tournament over the weekend, Due to the weather, no tournament champions were named.
The Loboes defeated the Pecos Eagles 12-5 in the first game of
the tournament.
They did not play a full 7-inning game because of the 2 hr 15 min time limit.
The Eagles took an early lead with three runs with Michael Gonzales pitching.
Michael Gonzales pitching was a pleasant surprise on the mound going the distance and earning the teams first victory. We still have a long way to go, but this victory makes it a lot easier for the Loboes to go to practice Coach Arcadio Rivera said.
The Loboes scored two runs in the first inning. The Loboes scored two runs in the first inning. The Loboes took the lead back in the bottom of the third inning with five runs. The Loboes added four more runs in the fourth innings while the Eagles were unable to score a run. Both teams scored one run in the fifth. Pecos added another run in the top of the sixth, however, the Loboes had the lead.
Pecos Josh Anchondo was injured and did not seem to be at his best, but we will take a victory over Pecos any day. "They have a quality program and are always in the hunt for the district title. They have been picked to finish in the top 2 in our district. We did a good job of putting the ball in play vs. Pecos." Rivera said.
The Loboes played one played one more game before the tournament was called due to rain.
We managed to score three runs in the top of the first and then held on for a 4-3 wins over Clint High School, Rivera said.
Kevin Kenyon was the winning pitcher with Miguel Gonzales relieving at the bottom of the seventh.
"He ( Kenyon) did a fine job. Miguel Gonzales came in to earn the save and help the Loboes win their 2nd game of the year", Rivera said.
The Loboes scored three run to start the game. They added another run in the fifth inning. Clint managed to score two runs in the sixth inning and added another run in the bottom of the seventh.
"I was disappointed in our hitting after getting to hits vs. Pecos. We need to put the ball in play more than we did vs. Clint. We were lucky to come out of this game with a victory. We only had 3 hits and really what won the game was Clint's inability to make the routine play," Rivera said.
The Loboes will play the Alpine bucks on Tuesday at the Lobo Baseball field staring at 7p.m. following the JV at 5 p.m.
The Loboes will co-host the Sandhills Tournament with Kermit High School starting on Thursday.
