Presidio Too Much for Lobo Baseball
By Randy Hogan ~ Monahans News ~ April 12, 2005

The Loboes traveled to the border city city of Presidio to take on the number four team in Class 3-A baseball Friday night, and came up short 7-1 to the Blue Devils.

"Presidio has pitching," Coach Arcadio Rivera said. PHS send Alex Calderon to the mound and pitched as well as anyone has against the Loboes this year. Calderon, A pre season All State selection, struck out 15 Monahans batters to control the game. "That means the defense only has to work to get six more outs in a seven inning game," Rivera added.

The Loboes went up 1-0 on the District leading Blue Devils (17-0-1, before Presidio came back to tie the game in the third inning. Presidio scored two more runs in the fourth inning to go up 3-1. Monahans made some costly sophomore errors by not taking the easy outs, and trying to make something happen, and the Blue devils took advantage for a 7-1 lead going into the top of the seventh inning.

The Loboes played well defensively against the highly touted Blue Devils. "Presidio did get some lucky hits," Rivera said. "They got three perfect bunts, and those hits led to runs in those innings."

Overall, the Loboes improved since the district opener with Presidio, but Coach Rivera knows that MHS has to be able to hit the ball. "We have to hit the ball, you can't strike out and have a chance with good teams," Rivera concluded. "Friday night against Calderon we did not execute."

The Loboes are back home Tuesday night at 7:00 to host the Pecos Eagles in a big district show down. The Eagles are in the same shoes as the Loboes this week, needing a win to keep pace in the District 3-AAA race.
