The Monahans Lobo varsity baseball team loaded up the bus and headed to Alpine for the 2007 season opener. Solid pitching gave the Loboes a victory over the Bucks.
Monahans scored two runs in the first inning, while Alpine scored none. In the second inning, Monahans scored another two runs compared to Alpine's one. Those were the last runs of the night, making the final score 4-1.
The winning pitcher of the night was Steven Valles. He pitched six strikeouts and no walks. Also pitching for the Loboes was Tico Olivas, who struck out four batters and pitched four walks.
Kenny Almanza, Dominique Estorga, Matt Montoya, and Valles each had one triple.
"The team won tonight because of our pitching. If we are going to win and be a successful team, we are going to have to hit and put the ball in play more than we did against Alpine. We still do not have all our kids out, but that is giving some of the younger kids a chance to play and get some experience," said head coach Arcadio Rivera, who is waiting on four players who remain busy with basketball playoffs.
The next game for the Lobo varsity baseball team is against Seminole at Lobo Field in Monahans at 4:00pm Friday.
