Monahans Advances to West Texas March Classic Championship Round

Greenwood hosted the West Texas March Classic baseball tournament held at Christensen Stadium, Citibank Ballpark, and Greenwood High School.  The Lobo varsity baseball team advanced to the championship round with good pitching and sound play.

Thursday afternoon, Monahans played Roosevelt High School at Citibank Ballpark.  With two doubles from first baseman Blake Hughes, who had three RBI's, and a triple from Anthony Cota, Monahans won the game 9-3.  Dominique Estorga had three RBI's.  Estorga, Steven Valles, and Cota doubled in the game.

Thursday night in Greenwood, Monahans faced 2006 tournament champ Iowa Park.  With Steven Valles pitching, Monahans held on to a 3-0 lead through the third inning.  In the top of the fourth, bases were loaded with two outs when Sean Merrick swatted a double and drove in three runs.  In the fifth inning, the Loboes added a run and the Valles struck our the side for the shutout and an 8-0 victory.

In Friday's game against Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill, shortstop Paul Dominguez and Merrick went 2-for-4.  Dominguez and Hughes had two RBI's.  The game stayed close throughout, and Chapel Hill finished the game with a one-run lead, 10-9.

Monahans beat Seminole 13-10 on Friday before advancing to the championship game Saturday night against Lubbock Cooper, a team who had beat Amarillo Caprock.

Monahans was only able to score one run against Cooper.  Sean Merrick was 2-for-3 with a single and a triple.  The Loboes were the tournament runner-ups after falling 13-1 to Lubbock Cooper.
