Lobo baseball fans braved the brisk
temperatures in support of Monahans on Friday night when the Fort Stockton
Panthers were in town. The Loboes overcame early fielding errors with
solid pitching by Blake Hughes and good back up in the outfield to bring in a
7-2 victory.
In the top of the second, Fort Stockton was the first to bring in a run with a base hit. With two outs, Quincy Titus caught a fly ball in centerfield for the third out to carry the game into the bottom. It was three Loboes up and three down to leave Monahans trailing 0-1.
In the bottom of the third, Stockton's Fransisco Jaquez pitched two walks to put Ivan Rios and Kalep Warden on first and second. Aaron Armendariz followed with a hit, when Stockton dropped the ball at second base, allowing Armendariz to double and bring in Rios to even the score 1-1.
Another walk put Ty Horton at first to load the bases. Blake Hughes tallied one RBI in the next at-bat to give the Loboes a 2-1 lead going into the fourth.
With Panthers on first and third after a Monahans fielding error, Fort Stockton put down a bunt that pitcher Kalep Warden could not recover in time to stop damage. The Panthers brought in another run to tie the score at 2 runs.
With bases loaded and two outs, Steven Valles ended the inning with a catch near second base.
Blake Hughes pitched the final three innings for Monahans, putting Warden at third base and Williams at first.
With two outs, the count was three balls and one strike. It was as close as Hughes would come to walking one in the game.
"Don't lose 'em kid, we got your back. Just throw a strike," was Matthew Montoya's call from right field.
Hughes pitched the strike that was hit into right field and gave Montoya the chance to back up his promise. With a dive and roll, Montoya made the catch that ended the top of the fifth.
Hughes pitched three consecutive strikeouts in the top of the sixth to incite the Monahans' takeover.
Valles took his base when he was hit by the pitch in the bottom of the sixth. Williams then made a hit that looked like it was on its way to centerfield's glove, but it was dropped. Valles raced to second, and Williams was safe at first.
With Stockton's pitcher tiring, Titus took his base with a walk in the next at-bat.
Mark Arroyo singled to bring in Valles and keep the bases loaded.
Warden grounded a three-run triple right down the middle, bringing in Williams, Titus, and Arroyo and putting Monahans ahead 6-2.
Aaron Armendariz took a pitch in the side and his base. Stockton brought in a relief pitcher, but the damage was already done. Armendariz was caught stealing second while Ty Horton was at bat against the relief. In the commotion, Warden stole home almost unnoticed, to put Monahans ahead at 7-2.
Hughes struck out the first batter in the final inning, then stopped a grounder and tagged first base for the second out. Panthers on second and third were left stranded when "B-lake" Hughes struck out the third to end the game, 7-2.
The Loboes are now 1-1 in district 2-3A, and will face the Panthers in a Tuesday night home game at 7:30 p.m.
