The Monahans freshmen football team pulled off a late, come-from-behind victory on Thursday night against the Pecos Eagles to retain an undefeated season record. From 10 points down in the third quarter, the freshmen rallied to a 21-17 victory.
A goal-line stand that stared first and goal from the
one yard line resulted in a Pecos Eagle field goal from the 23- yard line ,
sparked the beginning of the comeback.
An exciting 56-yard run by Jose Armendariz down to the one yard line led to a touchdown by Micah Ramsey, followed by a two-point conversion run by Armendariz to close the gap to two at 15-17.
The Loboes took the lead midway through the fourth quarter when Gael Espinoza pulled in a fourth- down pass from Wade Roark. That moved the score to 21-17 Monahans. The defense then took over and stopped the Eagles on their final drive of the night to seal the victory.
"We thought we started a little slow Thursday evening, but came back in the second half and played very well. The Defense made a great stand at the goal line and really turned the game around at that point," said Coach David Burnett. "Jose Armendariz sparked the offense on the next series, giving Micah Ramsey the chance to score his second touchdown of the night.
"And then that catch Gael made was just unbelievable, that was a big time catch."
"We were really excited about the response to being down by the response to being down by 10 points and coming back for the win. That showed a great deal about the character of this bunch of Loboes," Burnett said.
The freshmen will host the Fort Stockton freshmen
Panthers this week. Kick-off is at 5 pm on Thursday.
