Not much can be said when a high school football game ends in a 62-point shutout. Only one word fits the circumstance: mismatch.
The Loboes jumped out to an early lead, scoring 20 points in the first quarter on a 15-yard pass from Steven Valles to Mattew Montoya and a 9-yard Tyson Childress run.
Christian Poynor added two more touchdown in the second on 5-yard and 12-yard sprints.
A 35-yard run by Aaron Armendariz put the Loboes
up 41-0.
With only seconds remaining in the first half of the so-far shut-out, the Loboes were still thirsty for another one.
A short punt by Tornillo them set the Loboes up at the Coyote 24-yard line with only seconds remaining in the second quarter. Poynor picked up five quick yards in the next play before Valles fired a pass to Tanner Owens in the end zone. A Valles kick made it Monahans 48, Tornillo.
With less than eight seconds remaining in the fist half, the Coyotes returned the kickoff to their own 34-yard line, but a swarming Lobo tackle concluded the first-half romp.
Tornillo got a break early in the third quarter with a Monahans fumble, but the Coyotes were only able to get one first down out of the turnover, and punted to the 50-yard line after incomplete pass and a 25-yard loss.
Runningback Corey Standberry stepped into the game at first-and-goal to score on an 8-yard run with 5;05 remaining in third. Valles' kick brought the score to 55-0.
Later in the third, Sean Britton went on a 25-yard run for the nights final touchdown. The kick put the score at 62-0 at the end of the quarter.
With 8:03 remaining in the game, the Coyote defense forced a fumble at the goal line for a Tornillo touchback, but the Coyotes were unable to cash in, punting to Armendariz, who returned to the Tornillo 46-yard line for the Loboes.
A continuous clock in the fourth quarter did not leave room for another touchdown as the game wound down to a swift end. A continuous clock has to be agreed to by both coaches. If used it prevents the clock form being stopped after incomplete passes- a mercy rule in effect for situation like this game when one team is wholly over-matched.
The victory is the fourth district win for the Loboes. Following an expected win over Anthony on Friday, the team will begin the first round of playoffs.
The result of the Fabens-Clint game was significant for the Loboes, as the result determined playoff seeding. In double-over-time, Clint took Fabens in a 36-35 heartbreaker, which knocks Fabens out o f playoff berth.
The result seeds Monahans as the second place team in district 2-3A, behind Fort Stockton. The Panthers will play in the Division I bracket, while Monahans will begin with a bye as District 2-3A's number one seed in the Division II bracket.
Before playoffs, however, the Loboes will need to wrap up another district win this Friday against the Anthony Wildcats. The home game kicks off at 7:30 at Estes Memorial Stadium.
