The Monahans Lady Loboes picked up their second big win on Tuesday night
since suffering a some big losses to a few of the region's top team, as they
avenged an early season home loss to the Kermit Yellowjackets with a 60-38 road
victory in their final game before the Christmas holiday.
Monahans dropped a 54-52 game at home to Kermit last month, but this time doubled up the Jackets in the first half, taking a 14-7 lead, and were up at halftime by a 38-18 score. The win came a week after Monahans had beaten Brownfield at home by a 46-point margin, and that game after three losses at the Catclaw Classic in Abilene, including a 55-point loss to the host Wylie Bulldogs.
"I feel like going to Wylie tournament, and getting beaten by those tough teams made us better," Lobo coach Treasure Thaggard said. "We know what it's like to play against that level of competition, and we're not afraid to get banged on."
Kermit was minus their top scorer from the first meeting post Diana Quiroz, who was out with a knee injury, and Monahans' post Catherine Cutbirth took advantage inside, scoring a game-high 20 points , while Kellie Almanza added 13.
"They really looked good on the press break, both on the full-court and half-court," Thaggard said. "Kermit used both all night, and we kept breaking it and kept looking at different options."
All but one of the Loboes' Players scored in the game, while Kermit didn't have any player in double figures. Jackie Saucedo's nine points led the Jackets.
"I was impressed with Kermit last night. They hustled and never gave up, "Thaggard said. "Toward the end of the game, I took the press off because I don't like to run up the score, but I had to put it back on, because they started coming back."
Monahans improved to 4-8 on the season with their victory, and will have nine days off before returning to action at the Reagan County Tournament. Thaggard said the Loboes will face the Brownwood Lions in their first round game, set for 3 pm on Thursday, Dec. 28.
Kermit did come away with a win in the junior varsity game, by a 56-50 score. The JV's next game will be at home on Jan. 2, against the Greenwood Rangerettes.
