Despite reports of cancellation due to weather and dangerous roads, the
Monahans girls' varsity basketball game against Fort Stockton proceeded on the
date scheduled. The girls traveled to Fort Stockton Friday to bring home their
first district win of the season.
Dina Ortiz scored first for the Loboes from behind the line for three points. She later scored three more points by way of a two-point shot and a free throw. Ortiz's six points combined with four from junior Jordan Latham brought the Lady Loboes to a Four-point lead over the panthers, 10-6.
In the second quarter, Fort Stockton would double their first quarter score with 12 points. The Lady Loboes responded with their own 12 points, four of which came from Latham.
At the half, it was still anyone's game as the Loboes had only a four point lead, 22-18.
Monahans came into the third quarter to secure the lead, allowing only two points to Fort Stockton while hooping up 13. By the end of the quarter, Monahans held a comfortable 35-20 lead.
Kellie Almanza, Monica Ortega, and Catherine Cutbirth each shot two-point goals in the fourth quarter. Added to two free throw points from Almanza, the final score was 47-25.
Latham's total game points was 18, followed by Ortiz, also in double figures with 14.
The Lady Loboes will meet up with Fort Stockton again here Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
