The Monahans Lady Loboes accomplished part of what they set out to do Tuesday night in Seminole against the Maidens.  But while the Loboes were able to contain the Maidens' top score, they had their own problems putting up points against Seminole's defense.

The Maidens took a 9-0 lead after one period and held Monahans to six points in the first half, on the way to a 50-24 victory over the Loboes, who'll return home on Friday to host Lamesa, in a 6 pm game at the Jerry Larned Sports Complex.

"We had a tough time on offense, but our defense played really well," said Lobo coach Treasure Thaggard.  "The defense held who we thought were their three best scorers from getting double digits," as Felicia Alvarez, Shannon Wickson and Courtney Layton combined for just 20 points.

But Meagan Browning went 7-for-7 from the line and scored 12 points for the Maidens, while the Loboes would made only six trips to the line in the entire game, as Seminole controlled play inside.

"Rebounding hurt us. That's why we're out here (Wednesday) working on it, Thaggard said. "We got 11 rebounds the entire game, and I told the girls, if you look at the stats, nine out of 10 times the team that gets the most rebound wins."

"We did outscore them in the third quarter," Thaggard said, adding that the Loboes also had 10 steals in ten game, three by Catherine Cutbirth.  But at the other end, Monahans committed 17 turnovers, and the loss left them with a 7-12 record on the season.

Jordan Latham was the lone Monahans player in double figures with 10 points, while Cutbirth added eight.  Latham's nine was second for the Maidens, who went undefeated the past two seasons while a member of District 3-3A with the Loboes.

Lamesa also was a member of the same district with Monahans the past two years, and Thaggard said the teams could meet again in the area round of the Class 3A playoffs in February.  The Loboes face another possible playoff opponent next Tuesday, when they go to Andrews, before opening District 2-3A play on Jan. 19 at Fort Stockton.

Seminole also won Tuesday's freshmen game in overtime, and took the junior varsity contest.
