Lady Lobo fans were a little nervous early in the game against
Presidio
Friday night. Presidio came into the game 1-0 in district play, having beat
Fort Stockton. Monahans came in also undefeated in district play, 2-0. The
Only
team in the district Monahans had yet to beat was the Presidio Blue Devils.
The score was 6-13 early in the first quarter with Presidio in the lead. All six points were from Jordan Latham. Free throws from Dina Ortiz, Kellie Almanza, and Lauren Fuentes put the score at 11-13 at the end of the first quarter, with Monahans trailing by two points.
A three-pointer from Dina Ortiz put Monahans in a one-point lead, 14-13 in the second quarter. Monahans held on to the lead through the second quarter. By the end of the first half, the score was Monahans 28, Presidio 24.
The game against Presidio was brutal, and both teams were counting fouls. Playing for Monahans, Bethany Willmon, Dina Ortiz, Catherine Cutbith, and Jordan Latham each had three fouls by the end of the third quarter. The score at the end of the third was 40-34, Monahans leading.
Monahans fought to keep the lead through the fourth quarter. And they fought hard. Bethany Willmon and Jordan Latham both fouled out. The lady Loboes still kept the lead, and the final score was 53-47.
The Lady Loboes remain undefeated in district play and are looking to repeat a win against Fort Stockton Tuesday night. The game is scheduled for 6 pm at the Jerry Larned Sports Complex.
