The Monahans Lady Lobo Basketball team played their first home
district game Tuesday night against the Pecos Eagles. After what appeared
to be an easy fist half for Monahans, Pecos stepped things up and brought the Lady
Loboes a challenge in the third quarter.
Monahans came out strong in the first quarter with 13 total points. Jordan Latham led scoring in the first quarter with six points. Senior Catherine Cutbirth followed with four. Compared with Pecos's four points in the first quarter, Monahans had a nice lead.
In the second quarter, two free throw shots, one each from Latham and Bethany Willmon, combined with seven points from senior Dina Ortiz gave the Ladies a total of 22 points against the Eagles' nine.
Coming back from halftime, no one seemed to expect Pecos to be able to bounce back from a 13- Point deficit, but the Eagles managed to make things interesting. The Pecos girls rounded up 14 points, while the Monahans girls only had two from a single shot by Latham. Dina Ortiz scored three points on free throws, protecting the lead, but Pecos was hot on the trail, only four points behind (27-23).
The Lady Loboes wouldn't have it in the fourth quarter and scored 2 times more points than they allowed (18-6). Latham and Willmon each scored 6 points, and Ortiz pulled in 6 from the free throw line. The final score was Monahans 45, Pecos 29, giving the Lady Loboes their second district win.
The next game for the Lady Loboes is Friday against the Blue Devils in Presidio at 6 p.m.
