The Monahans Lobo golf team could not make up enough ground in round tree of the District 3-AAA tour Tuesday in Seminole, finishing third in the district race. The Green carded a three round total of 1009, just nine strokes behind Fort Stockton for second place. "In UIL golf, it's a bitter sweet pill to swallow to finish third place," Lobo Coach David Burnett said. "It's your goal to move on to the regional tournament."
District 3-AAA Boys Golf final round team totals from Seminole are (1) Seminole "A" 332/334/311 - 977; (2) Fort Stockton "A" 328/351/321 - 1000; (3) Monahans "A" 336/341/332 - 1009; (4) Lamesa "A" 325/248/337 - 1010; (5) Pecos "A" 351/360/356 - 1067; (6) Monahans "B" 370/374/358 - 1102; (7) Greenwood "A" 372/388/357 - 1117; (8) Lamesa "B" 375/386/365 - 1126; (9) Fort Stockton "B" 384/385/378 - 1147; (10) Seminole "B" 452/457/443 0 1352.
The Loboes struggled through the season battling consistency but found a diamond in the rough through the play of junior Victor Calzada.
Calzada finished in second place of the District 3-AAA medalist, and will represent MHS at the Regional tournament as an individual. "I am really proud of Victor," added Coach Burnett. "His success is directly related to his hard work and dedication to the game. For the last few years people have noticed this little guy at the golf course when it opens in the morning and he's been the last to leave many nights."
The top five medalists in District 3-AAA are (1) Brady Shivers, Seminole 227; (2) Victor Calzada, Monahans 238; (3) Nunnie Rodriguez, Fort Stockton 240; (4) Michael Nichols, Pecos 241; (5) Brett Nichols, Seminole 241.
The 3-3A All District golf team included Calzada, junior Joe Joe Birdwell and senior J.W Burnett of Monahans.
Shelton Burnett (83), Chad Gray (84), Zach Price (87), Justin Ochoa (90) and Cody Rankin (93) each posted their career best in district tournaments this year, and were recognized by Coach Burnett for their accomplishments. "I think all these young men need to be recognized and remembered," Coach Burnett said.
