MHS Golfers Show Improvement
From Staff Reports, The Monahans News, February 28, 2006

The Monahans Loboes took on a tough and weathered harsh elements to finish fifth at Tall City Invitational in Midland Saturday.

The Loboes fifth place finish came in a field of 18 teams many of which will compete in the same regional with the Loboes down the road.

"We moved up one position to fifth placed on Saturday," MHS coach David Burnett said.  "It was a strong field once again, and we got to go head to head with some teams we will meet in Regionals."

Victor Calzada led the way for MHS carding a 76-77 two rounds.  Calzada's 153 total also earned him fifth place in the individual medal standings.

"Victor played good golf once again," Burnett said.  "He has been consistent all season and continues to lead our team.  He really did a great job."

Joe Joe Birdwell followed Calzada with a 79-83 (162).  Cory Petree shot 88-86(174), and Chad Gray carded an 87-92 (179) to round out the Loboes Scoring.

"I really thought we had a good tournament considering the extremely tough wind conditions," Burnett said.  "There is nothing to stop the wind at Nueva Vista, but we were able to close the gap in the second round and got better as a team."

Graham won the tournament with a team total 623, followed by Snyder (633), Borger (645)), Lameas (657), Monahans (662), Midland Christian (666), Fort Stockton (672), Abilene Wylie (673), Midland Trinity (675), Amarillo River Road (676), Canyon (690), Sweetwater (706), Seminole (707), Snyder (718), Perryton (720), Pecos (725), Levelland (734), and Greenwood(738).

"I am looking forward to the upcoming District competition and higher levels of play," Burnett said.  "We were able to see again down the road."

The Lobo JV will compete at the Lamesa tournament March 1, and the Varsity Loboes will challenge the field at the Andrews Invitational March 3-4.

"I am really proud of our kids, we are headed in the right direction," Burnett said.
