Loboes Bow Out at Region I-3A Tourney

The Monahans Lobo golf team turned in low scores at the Region I-3A Tournament in Midland, but unfortunately ended their season with a ninth place team finish.

The Loboes held the sixth position after round one Monday, just 14 strokes off the lead.

In fact, Monahans' 309 first round total was the third lowest score they posted this season. But a tough 322 team round on Tuesday dropped MHS into a tie for ninth with Gainesville in Tuesday's final round.

Victor Calzada led the way for the Green, carding a two-round 77-76 (153) total in the Regional tournament.

But perhaps the biggest surprise came from Chad Gray who finished second on the team with a two-day total 73-83 (156).

Gray's 1-over 73 in round one was a personal best blasting the 81 he carded in Pecos at the District 3-3A championships earlier this month.

The MHS senior used an eagle on the ninth hole to jumpstart his record day.

Joe Joe Birdwell shot a two-round 78-80 (158) to end his colorful MHS career.

Cory Petree finished the tournament with an 81-85 (166), and Shelton Burnett added a 86-83 (169) for Monahans.
