The Lobo golf team fought through the elements and a tough men's field, finishing eleventh at the Big Spring Invitational that included 26 teams.

Chilly temperatures and gusting winds only added to the challenge of facing a strong field of mostly 5A and 4A competition, but the Loboes played with determination posting rounds of 345 and 343 for a team total (688).

"Under the conditions I thought we played pretty well," said MHS coach David Burnett.  "The guys fought through some tough weather conditions and gave a pretty good effort."

Victor Calzada led Monahans with rounds of 80-78 for a tournament total 158.

"I thought Victor did a great job coming back on Saturday with a 78, after when he considered a bad day (80) on Friday," Burnett said.

Also for the Loboes, Cory Petree carded 88-83 (171), Chad Gray 88-88 (176), Shelton Burnett 89-95 (184), and Justin Ochoa recorded 100-94 (194).

"Cory has played very steady for us early this year, and Chad, Shelton, and Justin all showed signs of what we expect from them this year.  They just need to put all eighteen holes together on the same day."

The Loboes are back on the links Friday as they participate in the Fort Stockton Invitational.

The junior Varsity Loboes will compete in the Andrews JV tournament Thursday.

"We really need to put together a couple of good rounds this week," said Burnett.
