Lobo Golf Extends District Lead
by Staff Writers ~~ The Monahans News,  April 3, 2008

The boys golf team extended their lead in the second round of district play Monday in Pecos.  Led by Kevin Coldewey this week, the Loboes turned in their lowest team score of the year shooting 320.

Coldewey shot 77 and Anthony Armendariz was one shot back at 78.  Rex Rose shot an 82 and Justin Ochoa carded an 83.  Tyler Watson rounded out the A Team score with an 85.

The B Team fell to fourth place in the team standings, shooting a team score of 356.  Wade Roark led this bunch with an 82, followed by Garrett King with an 85.  Timmy Fuentes shot a 99, Cameron Boyd carded a 96, and Heath Haynes finished with a score of 110.

The Loboes have a 16-shot lead over Fort Stockton, and Pecos is 34 shots back in third.

"I thought we handled going to Pecos for the second round very well, we all played very well on the front nine, but let the back nine slip up on us a little," said Coach David Burnett.  "Kevin Coldewey played great after starting three over par on his first three holes.  He settled in and finished just five over for the day.  He really kept his cool and played very steady."

"Anthony also played great.  He shot 38 on the front and finished with 40 on the back for his 78."

These guys have all played very steady the last couple of weeks.  We just have to come home next week and take care of business here.  It's usually an advantage to play at home but we have proved the past two weeks that having home course advantage doesn't always work.  It will be important to stay focused and make every shot count here in the final round of district play," said Burnett.

On the B Team, Wade Roark and Garrett King have played very well and are both in the top 10 in the district medalist race.

"I think next week is going to be a big week for the two teams.  Our goal with the first team will be to finish district play in the lead and bring the district championship back to Monahans, and for the B Team to come back and at least get the third place medal from Pecos.  I think we have a good shot at both goals and look forward to next week."

Next week's home round in Monahans will be held Tuesday, April 8 on the Ward County Golf Course.
