Five golfers and two tracksters travel to Austin this weekend with hope of bringing home state University Interscholastic League medals, and all of the have realistic state championship chances.

The Lady Lobo golf team go underway Thursday morning at Jimmy Clay Course as one of the favorites.  Although regional scores can be misleading because of differences in courses and weather, nobody comes in hotter then the Loboes.

With a repeat of their records sub 640 numbers at Odessa, the MHS girls would run away with the championship, but realistically it will no take that low a score.  The tight, tree-lined Clay course and the state tournament pressure usually drive scores up.  Monahans coach Becky Hix ranked the Yoakum 'A' team and the Snyder squad as the teams to look out for.  She said that nearly four week waiting period this year caused by TAKS testing has made it interesting.

"It has been so long since we played at regionals that you forget," she said before leaving Tuesday. "You forget what it felt like to play in competition and to win the medals.  It is the same for everyone.  I am just ready for it to get here."

The Loboes, Amy Williamson. Allison Valles, Amanda Stuessy, Whitney Mitchell, and Allison Jordan, are paired up with the Atlanta Belville, and Yoakum 'A' Thursday with beginning tee times as 8:50.

Jenna Fann will know by 11 am Friday if she can repeat as a state medal winner.  Last year's runner-up in the pole vault will have to beat her 10'0" regional time by at least a foot to win a medal.  The ever-improving marks in girls' pole vault indicate an 11'6" or 12' jump for this year's state champions, depending on weather.

Lobo Junior Richard Covington's 100 meter qualifying time puts him right in the middle of the pach for the state championship race Saturday afternoon. Like the golf scores qualifying times can be misleading and a 4A state chap will usually come in at about 10.5.
