On to Regionals!

Lobo girls district golf champs, boys a close second

     Monahans News -- April 16, 2004

Both MHS golf teams are one step closer to their goal of a state tournament berth after the final round of the district championships.

Lady Lobo Allison Jordan anchored her team to a 20- shot win over second place Pecos by shooting a 78 in her final round at Fort Stockton.  That score was good enough to win her the medallist title over friendly rival Shelly Martinez of Pecos by three shots.  Amanda Stuessy finished third with her 81- 78- 87 - 246, and Whitney Mitchell took fifth with a 252 total.

Allison Valles came through the final round with an 84, helping her team secure the win, and Amy Williamson shot 91 for the varsity team.

"Allison Valles has really stepped up," said Coach Becky Hix, "and Amy is getting there, too.  That is going to be important when we go to regionals.  We are extremely proud of the district championship, but we have a tough road ahead of us."

The boys team had the best score of the final round in Stockton, but could not quite make up the deficit the Panthers had going in.  The B & B boys Braxton Brin and Bobby Burkholder, each shot 76 in their final district rounds, and junior J.W. Burnett (Big Worm) carded an 83.  Joe Joe Birdwell, suffering from a stomach virus all day, struggled to an 87 and Isaac Nabarrete carded 88.

Brin added a silver medal to his trophy case, playing solid golf for three rounds, 72-76-76-224.

"I thought we were going to pull off the comeback and win the district championship," said boys' coach David Burnett.  "Braxton and Bobby came through with great rounds, but we could not find the right combination.  I see us turning in some good scores next Monday and Tuesday."

The teams have few practice days left before the Region I-AAA Championships.  The boys tee off Monday at Nueva Vista in Midland, and the girls have two rounds at Ratliff Ranch in Odessa to try to make the state tournament.

The boys will be attempting to be the first Monahans team to make it to Austin via the Nueva Vista Course.  The new course is now more familiar to the team, and the proximity should be an advantage for the Loboes.

The 3A state championships will be May 13-14.
