New BCIS teacher Laurie Owens is happy to be back in Monahans after a ten-year absence, she thinks people are even friendlier than before.

During her last term at MHS, Owens coached the girls' shot put and discus throwers.

Owens is married to Head Football Coach and Athletic Director, Mickey Owens.  They have three children, Tanner, 15, Trevor, 13, Landry, 9.

Her funniest memory of their marriage was when she was watching Coach Owens try to Turkey Bowl at a Jackalopes hockey game.

Owens was born in New Braunfels, Texas and attended Canyon High School where she played volleyball, track, basketball and participated in band.

She says one of her greatest memories from high school is her 1973 Dodge 15-passenger van in which she and all her friends piled into and cruised all over town.

"Teaching is never boring," Owens said.  "Each day brings new experiences."

One of the hardest things for her to overcome was the death of one of her students.

"My favorite thing about my job," Owens said, "is when students return after they have graduated and tell me they have used the skills they learned in my class."

Despite her describing herself as very social in high school, Owens never had a boyfriend in high school.  She met Coach Owens in college.

"We met in the ASU cafeteria and it's been crazy ever since," Owens said.

Owens hails to us from Miles ISD, where she says it was very difficult to leave her students and teachers that had become good friends.  She also didn't want to leave her old computer lab.

"My goal for this year is to get to know as many students as possible and be a positive role model," Owens said.

Owens says she chose this profession because each day is different.
