From Staff Reports, February 21, 2006

The Monahans Lobo Varsity boy's golf team of Victor Calzada, Chad Gray, Shelton Burnett, Cory Petree, and Justin Ochoa placed first in the annual Fort Stockton Invitational.

Victor led the Loboes and also won the medalist contest with rounds of 78, and 40 in a weather shortened day on Saturday.  His total of 118 was four shots better than the second medalist.

"Victor is really playing very good golf right now, he's giving our team the leadership you look for out of your seniors," said MHS Coach David Burnett.

Cory Petree finished second for the lobo team with scores of 84 and 42, followed by Shelton Burnett at 86 and 45.

Chad Gray was one shot back with 86,46, and Justin Ochoa shot scores of 88 and 48.

"Cory, Shelton, and Chad are playing better each week, and I think Justin Ochoa is showing signs of good things to come for him," said Burnett.

The Loboes trailed Fort Stockton by two shots after the first round on Friday and fought back, picking up three strokes after the first nine hole of the second day to get the win by one shot.

"We did not know the day would be cut short when we started Saturday morning," said Burnett.  "But the last thing I told everyone of the guys was that 'every shot counts', and when it was over a one shot victory backed up that statement."

The win in Fort Stockton came over a field of nine teams that included Fort Stockton (509), Midland Lee 'B' (510), Midland Christian (537), Seminole (538), Odessa High 'B' (546), Greenwood (549), Pecos (559), and El Paso Austin (589).

The Second team of Joe Joe Birdwell, Drake Bradley, Lee Martinez, Seth Howard, and Timmy Fuentes went to Andrews on Thursday, and finished second to B-teams from Andrews, Midland, Seminole, Big Spring, and Frenship.

Lee Martinez lead the team with a score of 87, followed by Drake Bradley at 88, Joe Joe Birdwell at 89, Seth Howard 95, and Timmy Fuentes shot 100.

"I thought we had a pretty good week last week in the golf program," said Coach Burnett.  "These kids are working hard and these preseason tournaments are giving us the chance to get better under the pressure of tournament play."

The Loboes will travel to Midland for the Tall City Tournament this weekend, February 24-25.
