The Lady Lobo Softball teams participated in the West Texas Classic Softball tournament this weekend in Midland. Play was scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, but the tournament came to an early end when high winds forced cancellation of Saturday's events.
Monahans varsity competed in a tournament pool with Midland High, Odessa High, Midland Christian, Big Spring, Sonora, Tascosa, Lubbock Coronado, and Hereford.
Monahans JV competed against JV teams from Midland High, Midland Christian, Odessa High, Abilene Cooper, Big Spring and Palo Duro.
The tournament standings were determined by a point system. Teams received six points for each win, one point for each run scored with a maximum of three per game, and one point for a shutout. A maximum of 10 points were allowed per game which would have allowed 60 possible points. However, with no play on Saturday, two games were cancelled for each team.
On Thursday, Varsity defeated Big Spring 9-6, then beat Hereford 7-1. Each of these wins was good for nine points. The Monahans JV earned 10 points from shutting out the Big Spring JV 17-0.
Both teams went into Friday's play undefeated, but after beating Midland Christian 8-5, the varsity team was shutout by Midland High 7-0.
Monahans JV also saw its first defeat of the tournament when Midland high's JV team trampled the Ladies 28-0. Midland Christian JV beat the Monahans JV team 17-13. The JV's only win on Friday was against Palo Duro, 10-9.
At the end of play Friday, both teams stood in third place in their pools. Monahans varsity had 27 points, behind 5A schools Midland High with 39 and Odessa High with 28. Monahans JV had 22 points, behind first place Midland High JV with 40 and second place Midland Christian JV with 27.
