Lady Loboes Bring Home Another Win

The Lady Lobo softball team headed to Pecos Friday night for a rematch of the 12-1 win earlier this season.  Friday night's game was not the landslide victory some had expected.  Despite errors and a lack of clutch hits, Monahans pulled out a one-run win.

The first inning was scoreless for both, and Monahans pulled in the game's first run in the top of the second.  In the fourth inning, each team scored one run, 2-1.  Neither team scored in the fifth inning, and both scored one each in the sixth.  Although Monahans did not score in the seventh inning, the Ladies held on to the lead and came out winning, 3-2.

"The difference between last time and this time was clutch hits and defense.  We hit the ball fairly well, but with 12 hits we should have scored more than 3 runs," said Coach David Parker.

In the last contest against Pecos, the Lady Loboes had five steals on five attempts.  Friday night, Pecos caught two out of four steal attempts.  As far as clutch hits, the Ladies were unable to bring in more than one runner at a time.

"We stranded seven and had two caught stealing.  If we're going to be successful in the playoffs, we cannot leave that many runners on.  As for defense, it was our worst performance of the year, and maybe the worst since I've been here.  We had six errors in the field, and that is way out of character for this team.  Fortunately, Pecos wasn't able to capitalize and score on many of them.  Anytime a team has six errors, that can almost guarantee a loss, which is why I feel fortunate that we came out with the win," said Parker.

Jeny Jarrett had two out of three of the game's RBI's.  Lana Santiago batted in one runner.

Heather Schuler pitched the game and seven strikeouts.  Only one Eagle walked in 28 batters faced.

"Heather's pitching was better than on Tuesday at Ft. Stockton.  She's starting to get back in the groove that we'll need her to be in for the playoffs," said Coach Parker.

Last month Monahans blew out Presidio 26-0.  Tuesday night the Ladies will face the Blue Devils again in Presidio.  The varsity game is scheduled for 4 pm.
