The Monahans Lobo tennis team finished second place overall to advance to the Regionals Tournament set April 27 and 28 at Ratliff Complex in Odessa.
Treena Excamilla defeated the number one and two seeds in the District championships to win the girls singles title Saturday in Monahans.
Escamilla defeated the #1 girls single seed, Jessica Fierro of Fort Stockton, to set up an all Monahans final. Dina Ortiz ran through her side of the bracket, knocking off #4 seed Leigh Hamption of Fort Stockton. So it was set, Ortiz vs. Escamilla for the District title.
Battling the wind and blistering heat, the Lady Loboes demonstrated speed and power, splitting the first two sets 6-2 and 2-6, to take the championship match to a third and deciding set. Near dehydration, the ladies met at center court and exchanged hugs with Treena Escamilla claiming a 6-4 victory and the District 3-AAA Championship.
"Treena surprised a lot of people today," Coach Josie McAnally said. "She was the number 3 seed and worked very hard. I knew she was capable, and she proved it today."
Dina Ortiz entered the tournament as the #2 seed, and was forced into a playback match with #1 seed Jessica Fierro. For District standing purposes, two players can not have the same tournament record, so a playback is necessary to determine a true placement. Ortiz battled Fierro late into the evening to finish second in District with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory.
"We are blessed that Dina can play all sports," said a smiling Coach McAnally. "Dina is a competitor and we are excited to have the top two singles players in District come from Monahans." Ortiz is also the catcher of the Lady Lobo softball team, who played at Midland Christian on Saturday afternoon.
The Monahans girls doubles team's competed very well at the tournament. The team on Laura Ramirez and Tiffany Bean rated the #4 seed in District fought back form setback to the #2 seeded team from Pecos to force a playback with the #3 seeded team from Greenwood. Ramirez and Bean defeated Heather McLemore and Ana Vega for third place in District.
Coach McAnally added, "The girls fought hard for third place and it's a heartbreaker that they were not allowed to get a playback."
Cheyenne Smith and Jennifer Rodriguez played very well before being eliminated by the #3 seeded team from Greenwood that later faced Ramirez and Bean.
The Lady Loboes finished first place with 27 points in front of Pecos with 20 in the girls standings.
Steven Martinez and Steven Valles also fell to seeded players in the boys singles, as did the boys doubles team of Chris Garcia and Jacob Kesey.
"We are excited to go to Regional's as the District Runner-up," Lobo Tennis Booster Club President Tommy Escamilla said. "I've waited for this day since Treena was in seventh grade, and I am very happy that the team could move on together."
Monahans finished in second place in the overall team standings with 30 points behind District Champion Fort Stockton with 39.
MHS moves into the Regional Tournament April 27 and 28 at Odessa's Ratliff Complex. "This is no doubt the toughest region in Texas," Coach McAnally added. The tournament looks to be headlined by Abilene Wylie and Vernon, both of which have deep winning traditions. Sweetwater, Snyder and Canyon added experience to the tournament as well.."We don't expect to seed any players at Regionals because of the big traditional teams, but we will surprise some people," summed up a smiling Coach McAnally.
