Monahans faced the State's toughest competition at the Region I-3A Tennis Championships on Wednesday, and the MHS netters displayed a lot of heart in the all-star field.

The Region I-3A tournament included big names and veteran teams from last year's State tournament, and ironically, all divisions were led by defending State champions from 2005.

The Monahans entries displayed tremendous heart in an attempt to dethrone the top seeds.

The Monahans mixed doubles team of Tiffany Bean and John Willhelm sparkled early, defeating Trevor McDonald and Morgan Evans of Levelland 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in the opening round.

This was the first time the UIL hosted the mixed doubles event.

In the quarterfinal round Bean and Willhelm faced the number three tournament seed Alex Herber and Jennifer Coble of Vernon.  Bean and Willhelm dropped the match 6-2, 6-3 to end an incredible season together.

Herber-Coble will play in the semi-final round Thursday with a trip to State on the line.

The girls doubles team of Laura Ramirez and Emily Acker were defeated 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 by third seed Beth Ansley and Lauren Wilkinson of Vernon.

Ansley-Wilkinson will face the number two tournament seed in the Semi-finals Thursday.
