The Monahans tennis team claimed the overall title at the Pecos
Invitational tennis tournament Friday, overpowering Pecos and Greenwood, to win
the team championship.
Laura Ramirez won the girls' singles title with a come-from-behind victory over Amber Pando of Pecos. Ramirez dropped the first set 4-6 to Pando, but blasted her opponent 6-1, 6-2 in the final two sets to win the match.
Kyle Bean defeated teammate Chris Garcia 6-2, 6-2 to earn third place in the boys' singles division.
The girls' doubles team of Emily Acker and Madison Murray battled Mimi Ornelas and Crystal Ikeler of Pecos in the championship match, but fell to the Lady Eagles in dramatic fashion. The Pecos duo won the title match 6-2, 1-6,7-6,12-7, and Monahans settled for second place.
Damien Nichols and Daniel Heslin played for the boys' doubles championship, but were defeated by the team from Midland Greenwood. The Nichols/Heslin duo took second place, while the team of Ryan Day and Andrew Orona claimed consolation.
Monahans dominated the mixed doubles' division, as both Lobo teams entered squared off in the championship match.
John Wilhelm and Tiffany Bean proved they are still the team to beat, overpowering the Pecos team of Ramirez and Bustillos before knocking off fellow Loboes Michael Derrick and Cheyenne Smith in the finals.
Monahans picked up a huge 8 points in the mixed doubles division, which proved to be the measure of victory in the overall team standings.
Final team standings at the Pecos Invitational include: Monahans 22, Pecos 18, Greenwood 10.
The Loboes are back on the road Saturday at Midland Christian.
