Lobo Netters Defeat the Eagles

The Monahans Loboes tennis team closed out the fall portion of their 2006- 07 schedule on Tuesday with their second win in eight days over the Pecos Eagles.

The Loboes, 16-4 winners at home on Oct. 3, came away with a 15-5 win over the Eagles on the Pecos High School tennis courts.  Monahans won nine of 10 matches on the girls' side, while taking six of the 10 matches in boys' singles and doubles.

Madison Murry, Jennifer Rodriguez, Hanna Beth Cater, Amanda Chavez and Hollie Derrick each won in singles and doubles play, while for the boys' No. 2 seed John Witucki , No.4 seed Andrew Orona, No. 5 seed Jim Forbush and No. 7 seed Matthew Gonzales picked up singles victories, after teaming up for wins at the No. 2 and 3 doubles positions.

Orona had the closest win of the day, taking a 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 decision over Pecos' Derek Barron, while Witucki defeated Jerris Rayos by scores of 6-3, 7-6.  All of Monahans wins on the girls' side were by relatively wide margins, and the Loboes came close to a sweep, with No.1 seed Tiffany Bean being edged out by the Eagles' Priscilla Sotelo, 9-8 (11-9).

The next matches for  Monahans won't be until January, when the spring tennis season gets underway.  That will include District 2-3A team and individual play, which with this year's realignment, will only feature the Loboes, Eagles and Fort Stockton Panthers.

Michael Derrick lost to Francisco Ornelas, 6-0, 6-2; John Witucki defeated Jerris Rayos, 6-3, 7-6.  Ryan Day lost to Cody Zamarippa, 8-6: Andrew Orona defeated Derrick Barron, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5; Jim Forbush defeated Michael Buentello, 7-5, 6-1; Jerome Ranallo lost to Noah Munoz, 6-1, 6-0; Matthew Gonzales defeated Elias Alvarado, 9-7.

Girls Singles
Tiffany Bean lost to Priscilla Sotelo, 9-8 (11-9); Madison Murray defeated Hope Mora, 6-2, 6-0; Jennifer Rodriguez defeated Victoria Montoya, 8-3; Hannah Cater defeated Yesinia Munoz, 8-0; Amanda Chavez defeated Meagan Lopez, 6-0, 6-0; Hollie Derrick defeated Jessica Munoz, 6-1, 6-0; Laura Phipps defeated Julie Licon, 8-0.

Boys Doubles
Derrick and Day lost to Ornelas and Rayos, 8-3; Witucki and Orona defeated Zamarippa and Barron, 8-1; Gonzales and Forbush defeated Munoz and Buentello, 8-5.

Girls Doubles
Murray and Bean defeated Ikeler and Sotelo, 8-3; Rodriguez and Cater defeated Mora and J. Munoz, 8-3; Chavez and Derrick defeated Genesis Salgado and Licon, 8-0.
