Lobo Netters Take First Place

The Lobo tennis team hosted and won the Monahans Invitational tournament this weekend.  With 52 points, the team beat Pecos, who followed in second with 39.

In boy's singles, John Witucki placed fourth for three team points.  He defeated Cepero of Midland Trinity 6-3 and 6-1.  Then lost to True, also of Midland Trinity, 6-2, 6-4.

Also playing in boy's singles was Kyle Bean, who played in the consolation bracket, defeating Seminole's Castillo 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.  He was then defeated by Trinity's Cepero 6-2, 7-5.

The boys' doubles team of Michael Derrick and Ryan Day placed second in the tournament.  The team lost to Pecos's Zubelda-Hanks in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the championship.

In girl's singles, Tiffany Bean placed second.  She defeated Trinity's Susan Strange 6-1, 6-4.  She then beat Maria Sierra of Seminole before falling to Buena Vista's Lauren Ivey in the championship.

Nicol Eddings won consolation for Monahans.  She lost to Seminole's Kim Arrambide in the first round, 6-4, 6-0, then defeated Amanda Renteria of Pecos 6-1, 6-3.  She sent Trinity's Kelli Tipton home 6-3, 7-6.  In the consolation final, she beat Susan Strange of Midland Trinity 6-3, 6-2.

Madison Murray defeated Kelli Tipton of Trinity 6-0, 6-1.  Emily Richardson beat Pecos' Amber Pando before losing to Strange in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.

The Lobo Team took first and second place in girls' doubles, defeating both Pecos teams.  The team of Jennifer Rodriguez and Hannah Beth Cater defeated Laura Phipps and Peggy Huber in the championship 6-0, 6-1.  Enroute, Rodriguez-Cater defeated Pecos' Parea-Marquez 6-2, 6-3.  Phipps-Huber defeated Lopez-Moore of Pecos 6-1, 6-0.

The mixed doubles team of Andrew Orona and Liz Truex placed first.  They defeated the Pecos team of Barron and Mora, 6-1 in both sets, and went on to defeat Alvarado-Munoz, also of Pecos 6-3, 6-0 in championship.

Tim Forbush and Hollie Derrick won against Seminole's Coon-Klassen 6-0, 6-1 before losing to second-place Alvarado-Munoz.

Monahans will participate in the Fort Stockton tournament this weekend, March 30-31.  The Fort Stockton tourney is the last contest before district play, which begins April 3, also in Fort Stockton.
