Monahans Places First in Local Tennis Tournament

Lobo and Lady Lobo tennis teams recently won first place in the Monahans Invitational tournament, defeating Fort Stockton, Pecos Seminole, Buena Vista, Midland Trinity, Kermit, and Wink.

Boys' Singles
Monahans took eight points from boys' singles, including five points for third-place Michael Derrick. Derrick defeated Jimmy Phillips of Kermit and Tanner Hardwick of Pecos before falling to Midland Trinity's Daniel Cepero.
Teammate Damien Nichols defeated Joe Phillips of Kermit and Cody Zamarripa of Pecos before he was set to the third place match by fort Stockton's Jorge Sanchez
In the third place match Derrick defeated Nichols 3-4, placing the teammates third and fourth in the bracket, respectively.
Loren Miller lost a first round game to Alex Milam of Fort Stockton, and second round consolation game of Ray of Wink.

Girls' Singles
Liz Truex climbed her way to the top of the bracket and was defeated in the championship game by Lauren Ivey of Buena Vista. In the first round, Truex beat Lily Kim of Midland Trinity and Leslee Bliznak of Fort Stockton.

Boys Doubles
Smith-Rios were unable to get a first round win in boys' doubles, falling 3-8 to Reyes Magee of Fort Stockton. they then beat O'Leary-Blakemore of Midland trinity in their final win of the night. Alvarado-Contreras of Pecos won the consolation bracket.

Girls Doubles
Huber-Richardson defeated Fort Stockton's Gomez-Santos 8-2 before falling to Fuentez-Long of Pecos. In the third-place match, Huber-Richardson beat Maneje-Lopez of Pecos.
Derrick-Phipps of Monahans beat jTester-Kesey, also of Monahans 8-2, then Maneje-Lopes (Pecos) to reach the championship, where they fell to Pecos' Fuentez-Long

Mixed Doubles
Monahans had greatest success in mixed doubles, where the team saw 15 points by way of first and third-place victories. Witucki-Murray beat Alvarado-Rodriguez of Kermit 8-0, Agundiz-Gaylor of Fort Stockton 6-2, 6-0 before reaching the championship. There, they defeated the Fort Stockton team of Granado-Young. Gonzales-Eddings defeated Falcon-Steel of Kermit before being set to the third place round with a loss to Granado-Young. Monahans defeated Agundiz-Gaylor 8-6 for third place. Forbush-Johnson lost 8-3 in the first round to Agundiz-Gaylor, then defeated Alvarado-Rodriguez of Kermit. They lost the next game to Falcon-Steel.
