On an August-like Friday and Saturday afternoon, the young MHS tennis squad continued to show improvement with some top finishes last weekend.
Sophomore sisters Laura and Wanda Ramirez played to a hard fought second place medal, and in girls singles Christy Gatzki took second place to a long-time opponent from Pecos.
Treena Escamilla bounced back from losing her first round match and ended up consolation, Irene Blocker took sixth, and freshman Tiffany Bean finished a very respectable eighth place in her first home tournament.
"It was very hot," said coach Josie McAnally, "but I thought we played about as good as we could."
Cheyenne Smith and Jennifer Rodriguez teamed up for a fifth place finish, and in boys singles Teddy Figueroa was eighth and Jacob Kesey 13th.
Steven Martinez and partner Simon Leyva played to a fourth place finish, with John Wilhelm/Woody Vidana in fifth, and the Cory Yoho/Corbin Shawn team 10th.
"I think since Regionals we have played good tennis, especially for as young as we are," the coach said. "We may just surprise some people at district."
They'll go to Fort Stockton April 2-3 for their last warm-up match.
The district meet will be in Stockton ten days later.
