ODESSA -- Chelsea Cartwright had one of those special days for the Monahans girls track team.
The diminutive but speedy sprinter who's like a blur on the track, led an outstanding effort by the Monahans' girls at the Region I-3A track meet at Ratliff Stadium as she won the 100 hurdles, helped the 400 relay team place first, helped the 800 relay team place second and won a bronze medal in the triple jump.
Thanks in part to that effort, the Monahans' girls placed second in the meet with 54 points, 33 behind first place Abilene Wylie.
"This meet was neat for me because there was a lot of good competition," Cartwright said. "This was important for me because this was my last year and I wanted to give it my all."
Still, qualifying for state in three events was a surprise for Cartwright.
"I didn't think I would do this good," Cartwright said. "I didn't think we were going to do as good in the 800 meter relay but we pushed it."
Cartwright, who was a late replacement, joined Jordan Latham, Crystal Madrid and Amanda Hernandez to post the best time the 800 relay team has had this year of 1:44.45.
"These kids have worked so hard," Monahans coach Chris Simpson said. "We had Kim Madrid out (with a knee injury) and she was on both relay teams. Amanda Hernandez came in and replaced her and she's really an alternate. Chelsea, what can you say about her, she was just incredible today. Jordan Latham has just gotten faster, and of course there's Crystal, who's Kim sister, and it's been real emotional for her and she ran real well on both relays."
The same four would strike gold in the 400 when they edged the Gainesville team with a time of 49.87.
"We had the second-best time coming in to Gainesville, but I knew if we ran hard and ran our race we would be right in the mix, and that's what we did," Simpson said.
The X-factor, however was Cartwright, who seemed to be the glue to hold it all together.
"Last year she really came on in the hurdles, but this year her work ethic has been outstanding," said Simpson of her speedster.
While she enjoyed success on the relay teams, Cartwright's specialty and passion remain in the 100 hurdles, where she posted a great time of 14.49 to take home regional gold for the second consecutive year.
"I love the 100," Cartwright said. "I could run the 100 all day and I knew I would do well in that event. I went last year to state but I didn't do too well. I think I can win (state) this year."
Cartwright also thinks the relay teams can do well in Austin.
"I think we'll do well in the sprint relay, while in the 800, we're just going to have to keep working hard," Cartwright said.
MONAHANS BOYS HAVE GOOD DAY: The Monahans boys finished in seventh place in the team standings with 30 points.
Qualifying for state for the Loboes were Steven Richardson, who won the shot put with a throw of 51-08.50 and Chris Collins, who won the 800 in a close race with a time of 2:00.20.
Collins was in the front of the pack for most of the race, fell behind after the first 400 meters, but then turned it up to edge Kurtis Limmer by 8/10 of a second.
"It was a tough race, that's all I can say," Collins said. "I figured I was going to win. I just gave it all I got."
