The Monahans Lady Lobo track team won the team championship of the Comanche Relays Saturday at Fort Stockton, building a solid lead after the field events and cruising to a decisive victory in the running finals.

MHS racked up 193 total points, outscoring the second place Crane Lady Birds by 78 points who finished with a team total 115.  Andrews followed with 62.5, Greenwood (60), Pecos (51.5), and Presidio (50).

"I am proud of the girls for the way they performed in our first meet of the season," said MHS coach Chris Simpson.  "They did what they needed to do, and put a pretty good distance between them and second place."

The Lady Loboes began their dominating performance in the field events, jumping out to a 70-plus point lead on the field of competitors.

Alison Miller won the girls shot put title with a personal best launch of 36'5".

"Ali had her best throw of her career today," Simpson said.  "It was a great way to start the season."

In the discus event, Miller finished in second place behind Chantell Mazone of Pecos.  Her throw of 119'2" was good enough to earn the silver medal, and fell just short of Mazone's 122'2 1/2".

"Although it wasn't Ali's career best, she is ahead of where she was at this time last year," Simpson said.  "She had a great effort.

MHS began to stockpile the points and jump start the medal count in the final four field events.

Jordan Latham won the girls high jump title with a 4'10" jump, followed by Kim Madrid's third place jump of 4'8".

Chelsea Cartwright took home the gold medal in the girl's long jump, winning the event with a jump of 16'3 3/4".  Latham added a silver medal to her meet total, taking second place on her jump of 15'10".

Kim Madrid's jump of 14'11 1/2" was good for fifth place in the event.

The girls triple jump was also owned by Monahans, as Crystal Madrid won the event with a jump of 32'7".

Chelsea Cartwright was on Madrid's heels, claiming second place with a jump of 31'6".  Lyndsey Wright's jump of 30'1/2" gave her a sixth place finish in the triple jump.

In the final field event, Bree Williams soared to a third place finished with an 8'6" vault in the girls pole vault.  Kelsi Hayes sealed the deal by taking fourth place with a vault of 8' to give the Ladies a commanding lead going into the running events.

"We expected to put up some points in the field events," Simpson said.  "The girls really stepped up and did their job giving us a big lead."

The Monahans 4x100 meter relay team of Chelsea Cartwright, Crystal Madrid, Jordan Latham and Kim Madrid scorched the field, winning the gold medal with a time of 51.11.  Greenwood finished second by clocking a 54.02.

Daisy Zamarippa turned in a solid time of 2:48.03 in the 800 meter run to earn fourth place in the event.

In an event that she competed in at the State Track and Field Championships last year, Cartwright proved that she is still the one to beat in this region by winning first place in the 100 meter hurdles.

Cartwright posted a time of 16.44 to win the title, followed by Bree Williams with a time of 18.25 in the event for fourth place.

As if MHS needed to punctuate the days effort, Cartwright ran away from the competition in the 100 meter dash by recording a time of 12.34 to claim first place.

Gentry Watson game MHS a fifth place finish in the 100 with a time of 13.96.

The Ladies 4x200 meter relay team of Crystal Madrid, Amanda Hernandez, Jordan Latham and Kim Madrid set the track on fire with an impressive 1:51.43 time to win the gold medal.

MHS crossed the finish line over four seconds ahead of second place Greenwood at 1:55.05.

In the 300 meter hurdles finals, Crystal Madrid won the event with a time of 48.87.  Kim Madrid finished third with a time of 51.55, and Jordan Latham posted a 53.24 for sixth place in the event.

Daisy Zamarippa added another long distance medal to her massive collection by picking up the silver in the 1600-meter run.  Zamarippa earned the second place finish with an outstanding time of 6:07.09.

The Lady Loboes ended the meet with a second place finish in the 4x400 meter relay.  The team of Lyndsay Wright, Alyssa Roark,  Monica Ortega and Amanda Hernandez clocked a time of 4:29.78 to win the silver medal, just behind Crane at 4:19.43.

"Overall I am very pleased with our  performance," Simpson said.  "We saw some of the teams we'll be competing with in district, and our girls got off to a good start.  We still need some work, but we are where we needed to be today."

The Ladies are entered in the Pecos meet next week, and expected to have Catherine Cutbirth suit up and run.

Cutbirth competed at the Class 4A Swimming and Diving championships in Austin over the weekend.  She qualified for the state competition by winning the Regional 100 freestyle championship.

"We still need to find someone to run the 100 and 400 for us, but overall we had a good first meet.  The girls just keep showing improvement, and that is exciting," Simpson said.
