Holly Get Another State Ticket

High-jumper Kati Holly sprung her way to her second state berth at Friday's Region I-3A meet.

Holly is just a sophomore at Monahans High, but this will be her second consecutive trip to the Sate meet.

She placed fifth at state last year, with a jump of five feet, four inches.

On Friday, Holly was accompanied by Jordan Latham and Kali Lewis, who swept the region berths for the Loboes, by finishing in the top three spots at the district meet in Fort Stockton two weeks ago.

While other athletes in the event were taking two or three attempts at 4-10, Holly did not even begin competing until 5-2.  She cleared 5-2 on her first attempt, and 5-4 on her first attempt.  In fact Holly did not need a second attempt at any height until she was already decided the Region I champion.

Holly will be joined in Austin by second-place finisher Emily Eisenrich of Andrews.  Eisenrich cleared 5-6 in two jumps, and was unable to clear 5-8, which Holly did in the first run to tie the meet record set in 2006.  The record was set by Audrey Svane of Pilot Point, who went on to win the State Championship that year, with the same 5-8 jump.  Svane returned to win the state championship again in 2007, clearing 5-7.

Holly's first miss on Friday came at 5-9, when she attempted to set a new record.  She missed all three attempts, but has two more years to put her name in the record books.

The highest jump at any of this year's Region meets in Conference 3A, other than Holly's, was Eisenrich's jump of 5-6.  The next highest jump was 5-5, by Suzy Prikryl from Region 4.

The 3A State Track and Field Meet takes place in Austin at Mike A. Myers Stadium Friday and Saturday, May 9 and 10.  the girls' high jump is scheduled for Friday at 12:10 pm.
