Monahans Begins Road Back to State Championship

LUBBOCK  Monahans High School’s volleyball team had little trouble in its 2005 playoff debut Saturday, routing Amarillo River Road 25-8, 25-13, 25-8.

The Lady Loboes (38-3) advanced to face Canyon (30-6) on Tuesday at Lubbock Christian University’s Rip Griffin Center in the rematch of a regional quarterfinal from last season.  The match is tentatively scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Against River Road, Monahans got 20 kills from Brittany Hughes and 11 from Alison Miller, while Catherine Cutbirth added six of her own.

Candace Swarb had 34 setting assists, five digs and one service aces, while Bethany Willmon and Dina Ortiz helped lead the defensive effort with nine and eight digs, respectively.

Hughes added four blocks, six digs and three aces while Cutbirth had four aces of her own.

Bailey Marcum provided two digs and two aces.

Monahans had to rally for a five-game victory against Canyon last season before going on to win the Class 3A state championship.
