The News Honors Sportswoman & Sportsman
of the Year

The Monahans News is proud to honor the 2005 Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year to deserving Ward County residents.
Brittany Hughes was named the Sportswoman of the Year and
MWP-ISD Athletic Director Mickey Owens and GRISD Athletic
Director Clint Lowry
were named Co-Sportsman of the Year by The News.
Hughes, a senior at MHS, has earned practically every top honor in the state of Texas for her outstanding volleyball performance in 2005. Hughes was named as the Texas Small School Player of the Year by Lonestar Volleyball, as well as the Texas Girls Coaches Association Player of the Year for Class 1A-2A-3A.
In addition she earned a spot on the TGCA West All-Star squad, and was named to the TGCA and the Texas Sportswriters All-State team, and the TGCA academic All-State team.
Hughes was also named to the Class 3-A All-Tournament team at the state finals, and was the first ever Region I-3A MVP.
She earned local honors as the All-West Texas MVP, the All-Permian Basin MVP, as well as the District 3-3A MVP.
Mickey Owens was recognized as Co-Sportsman of the Year for
his outstanding leadership, guiding the Lobo football team to a perfect 10-0
regular season record and into the quarter-final round of the Class 3-A
playoffs.
In his first year as the Monahans head football coach, he led the Loboes in an amazing turn-around season into the playoffs. In 2004 the Loboes struggled to a 4-6 record.
Owens was also named District 3-3A Coach of the Year, as well as All-West Texas and the All-Permian Basin Coach of the Year in 2005.
Clint Lowry also earned Co-Sportsman of the Year honors for taking his Grandfalls -Royalty Cowboys into the semi-final round of the six man football playoff's this past season.
Lowry, in his fourth season as Athletic Director at GRISD, led the Cowboys to an impressive 11-2 record in 2005.
Under Lowry, the Cowboys have made great strides each season, from a dismal 2-8 record in 2002, to the incredible playoff run in 2005.
