Ladies Sweep Prowlers

The Monahans Lady Loboes volleyball team wrapped up another undefeated district season on Tuesday, as they closed out district and their home schedule with a sweep of the Fort Stockton Prowlers.

The Loboes ended 1-3A play with a 6-0 record by sweeping Fort Stockton, 25-12, 25-7, 25-9 at the Jerry Larned Multipurpose Complex.  It also improved Monahans' season record to 37-3 going into this coming Tuesday's playoff practice match in Denver City again the Mustangs.

"I thought Bethany Willmon had a really good game last night," said Loboes coach Patty Dominguez.  "She came in and had a couple of real good hits on the outside, similar to what she had done earlier against some of the bigger schools like Midland Christian and (Lubbock) Coronado."

Willmon had 12 kills to lead the Loboes, while Jordan Latham and Catherine Cutbirth had eight each for Monahans.

"They keyed on Catherine.  She didn't play bad, but they put so many blockers on her, we went outside, and Jordan and Bethany were able to take advantage of it," Dominguez said.

"I also thought our passing and defense were back on track again," she added.  "Katlin (Mitchell) had some good decisions.  We only had one play where there was some miscommunication.  Things ran really smoothly, and our passing was OK."

Fort Stockton's Angelica Newton and Kryshna Alfaro were the top hitters for the Prowlers, but had only three points each.  "We gave them three points on missed serves in Game 2 and still held them to seven points, so that was pretty good," Dominguez said.  "If we can be more consistent with our serves, that will help, but we are trying to serve more aggressively, so I understand we're going to make mistakes."

Fort Stockton ended their season 0-6 in district and 14-25 overall, after two straight second-place finishes.  Second place in District 1-3A will be decided on Saturday night in Alpine, when Pecos faces Presidio, after the Blue Devils tied the Eagles for second with a five-game win at home this past Tuesday.  The winner will face Tornillo in the opening round of the playoffs, while the loser will take on Fabens, with both matches set for Tuesday night at Van Horn.

Monahans will face Denver City that night on the Mustangs' home court, starting at 6:30 pm, while awaiting the winner between the Andrew Mustangs and Brownfield Cubs in the area round of the Class 3A playoffs.  Dominguez said that match had tentatively been set for Nov. 4 at a site and time to be announced.
