Lady Loboes Drop Match to Lubbock Coronado

The Monahans Lady Loboes were upended in a non-district match with Class 5A Lubbock Coronado Saturday, dropping straight sets 25-19, 25-19, 25-20 to the Mustangs.

"It was disappointing," Monahans head volleyball coach Parry Dominguez said.  "We didn't play up to our level of play, so anytime you play and lose that way, it's disappointing."

While all three games were close, Coronado led almost all the way.  The Lady Loboes never led by more than one point.

"We never played a team this year with that kind of speed," Dominguez said.  "I think that made a difference."

Despite possibly being a little bleary-eyed from a four-and-one-half-hour SAT placement test, Catherine Cutbirth still managed to pound out eight kills.

Monahans (25-3) had only one player in double figures in the hitting categories, as Bethany Willmon had 14 kills.

"Catherine and Bethany were really hitting the ball well today," Dominguez said.  "I need to get my juniors on track."

In addition to Willmon's 14 kills, she also accounted for 1 block and 9 digs in the match.

Cutbirth recorded 1 block, 5 digs and 2 aces, in addition to her 8 kills against the Mustangs.

Kaitlin Mitchell had 33 assists to lead the Lady Lobo attack.  She also picked up 1 kills, 4 digs and an ace against Coronado.

Bailey Marcum blasted the LCHS front line for 6 kills, in addition to her 3 blocks, 3 digs and a big service ace.

Jordan Latham recorded 8 kills and 2 blocks at the net, while digging out 8 big hits by Coronado.

Kim Wilson accounted for an assist in the match, while Heather Schulz recorded 1 dig.  Defensive specialist Dina Ortiz picked up 4 digs and Paige Shaw had 3 digs and an ace in Saturday's match at Lubbock.

The Lady Loboes are back in action Tuesday, as they play Crane and Andrews in a dual match at 5:30 pm.
