If ever there was a spirited high school volleyball
game, it was between the Monahans Lady Loboes and the Odessa High Lady Broncos
on Saturday at the Jerry Larned Sports Complex. The match went into five games,
but the Lady Broncos ended game five with a slim margin win.
Game one neared its end at a 23-pint tie. Heather Schulz put Monahans in the lead with a tip into Odessa High's defensive hole, but the Broncos scored twice more to put them on the winning side of game-point. When a kill attempt by Jordan Latham slammed into the net rather than the court, it gave Odessa the victory, 24-26.
Odessa High took a 4-0 lead in game two, but Monahans fought for a comeback. When the Lady Loboes were on the losing side of game-point 24-25, Kati Holly made a successful dig to keep the ball off the court floor, but when the ball sped to the ground after hitting the rafters, Holly was there to again keep it off the floor. However, the double-hit was called as was the game, 24-26.
Monahans found their zone in game three with a 6-0 lead, including a Heather Schulz ace. Odessa High was able to eventually get some points on the board, but never could quite get the Lady Loboes within their grasp. A controversial out-of-bounds call that favored Monahans left the already-noisy Odessa high crowned upset and rowdy. the Lady Broncos were only able to muster three more points before the end of the game. Bailey Marcum spiked the final blow of the game, and the block attempt sent the ball off the court giving Monahans a 25-17 victory.
Lady Lobo fans formed their own cheer section during game four counteract all the Red noise. The encouragement must have helped, as Monahans took the game decisively at 25-18.
After the Green challenged the Red to a "We've Got Spirit" yell-off, game five began. Odessa High again reached game-point with the help of a Monahans error with a one-point 15-14 advantage. The Match ended with a 14-16 Monahans loss.
Although Monahans lost the match, the team scored more points overall (112-103). Both of Odessa High's game wins were extended for the two-point advantage rule, while the Monahans wins were significant.
Marcum led the match in kills with 15. She led the match in blocks with 13. She also led her team in aces with three.
Monahans varsity now has a 22-10 record.
