The Lady Lobo volleyball teams were all on the road
this weekend as the Varsity made their rounds in San Angelo while the JV and
Freshman teams competed in Pecos. All teams made an impressive showing,
each playing in the final championship at their respective events.
The freshman team beat all opponents in two. They first beat Presidio 25-3 and 25-5 before beating Pecos 25-22 and 25-17. The Ladies then faced Midland Lee Freshman in the championship and walked away with the title, 26-24, 25-10.
After winning third place in their own Monahans tournament, the JV Lady Loboes came back with a vengeance in Pecos. They pummeled Marfa 25-5 and 25-13 before defeating Odessa High 25-16 and 25-13. In the championship game, they faced their rivals, the Pecos Eagles, who stretched them to three games, 25-14, 23-25 and 25-23.
"All girls played extremely well in winning the Championship trophy," said JV Coach Becky Hix.
The varsity girls traveled to San Angelo to play SA Central on Thursday night and faced defeat in three games. In the process, Heather Schulz led the team in kills with 12, followed closely by 11 from Bailey Marcum. Marcum led in blocks and digs with 5 each. Although the team was not able to produce a win that night the game provided some good experience for San Angelo's Nita Vannoy tournament, which kicked off on Friday.
Monahans picked off Marble Falls in two on Friday, 25-10 and 25-16 in the first round of White Bracket play. They then played Sweetwater in the semifinals and won 25-16, 25-18. They then defeated El Paso Hanks 25-16 twice to win the bracket and advance to Gold Bracket play on Saturday.
First on Saturday's agenda for the Green was El Paso Coronado, who they defeated to move on to the semifinals. Monahans beat Odessa High in the semifinals 30-28 and 25-12 for a spot in the championship game. They then faced San Angelo Central, who had defeated them earlier in the week on Thursday night. Revenge did not come for the Lady Loboes, who fell in two, 25-16 and 25-18.
Two Monahans girls, Jordan Latham and Kaitlin Mitchell made the All-Tournament Team.
The varsity and JV teams will play in a dual on Tuesday versus Monterrey and Lakeview in Lubbock.
Both squads are scheduled to take the courts at 4:30 pm. The freshman team is preparing for the Monahans Freshman Tournament, which takes place this weekend.
