Lady Loboes Press Through Pecos Resistance
By Jessica Ray Staff Writer ~~The Monahans News, October 9, 2007

The crowds were loud and the excitement was intense in Saturday's volleyball match-up between the Pecos Lady Eagles and the Monahans Lady Loboes.

One Pecos fan shouted, "They can be beat!" from the stands. Admittedly, the Lady Loboes now 26-10, can be beaten.

Unfortunately for the Lady Eagles, however, Saturday was not their day.

After a moment of silence, Heather Schulz was first up to the serving line.

Two Monahans errors put Pecos in a two-nothing lead, but the Lady Loboes soon began to pull away from the Lady Eagles.

Two consecutive aces by Jordan Latham put Monahans at 14, and Pecos at 8. The competition still remained, but Monahans was able to shut down Pecos fairly quickly.

A net violation called Pecos gave the Green the game point, 25-18.

Added to the sting of a lost football game the night before, the loss kept a noisy crowd.

The momentum must have helped the Eagles in game two, who worked their way up to an eight point, 21-13 lead over Monahans.

A Schulz kill brought the Loboes a point closer, but a Schulz ace shortly left Monahans still trailing, 16-22.

Pecos took a timeout after Bailey Marcum hit for 17-22. At 20-23, Pecos leading, the Lady Eagles had some trouble at the net and dropped a missed block. Soon, it was game point for Pecos, with Monahans at 22.

Latham broke up a Pecos serve, which Kaitlin Mitchell routinely set for a Marcum hit. That bought the Green just one point behind Pecos.

When a Monahans block attempt went out of bounds, the victory went to Pecos to tie the Match 1-1.

The Lady Loboes played a tight game three, and left the Lady Eagles far behind.

Schulz ended the game with an untouched kill, 25-15.

The intensity heated up again in game four, with Pecos determined to repeat a win and force Monahans into five.

The score stayed within two points throughout most of the game, with Pecos in the lead.

After a Schulz serve, Marcum began orchestrating the take-over. Her hit tied the teams at 21 before a Pecos tip put Monahans in the lead.

Pecos hit an out-of-bounds ball to put the Green ahead by two before calling a timeout.

When the game resumed, Pecos could not recover a hit by sophomore Shelbi Cornelius(#14) to put Monahans at game point.

The Lady Loboes then dropped two consecutive missed blocks to let Pecos come within one point.

At 24-23, Marcum killed just inside the line for a  25-23 game win.

Monahans is now 26-10 overall, and 2-0 in District.

The next district victims for the Lady Loboes are the Fort Stockton Prowlers.

Tuesday night's game begins at 6:30 pm at the Jerry Larned Sports Complex.
