SENIOR GUIDE 2007

1.       Make sure you will graduate. (Requirements are listed in registration booklet.)  Take courses you need to prepare for your chosen career or college major. If in doubt as to courses needed for certain majors, see me immediately.
  

  1. Take the required college entrance exam for your chosen college.  The next SAT ($41.50) will be Saturday, October 14.  (Registration deadline is September 29.)  The next ACT ($29.00 or $43.00) will be Saturday, October 28.  (Registration deadline is September 22.)
      
  2. Apply for admission to your selected college or colleges.  Applications are in my office.  Transcripts should be mailed with the applications.  After the first two (2), transcripts are $1.00 each.
      
  3. Have college entrance test scores sent to the college to which you are applying for admission and to our high school.  If you did not list the college at the time you registered and took the test, you will need to secure a score request card from your counselor.
      
  4. Invite your parents to attend the College Preview September 28, 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.
      
  5. After you have been accepted to a college, check the catalog to see if you are eligible for a scholarship.  If so, write immediately for the required application forms.  You must meet the college deadlines if you want to be considered for scholarships.
      
  6. ROTC scholarship deadline is December 1.  See me immediately if you are interested in applying.
      
  7. THEA (Texas Higher Education Assessment), formerly TASP (Texas Academic Skills Program) registration packets are in my office.  The next test will be given October 21.  Registration deadline is September 22.  (You must pass the TAKS exam before you can take this test.)
      
  8. All male students 18 years of age or over must be able to prove they have registered for Selective Service in order to qualify for federal financial assistance.
      
  9. You CANNOT apply for financial aid until January 1, 2007.  There are four kinds of financial aids for college and other post secondary institutions.
     

 ·         Federal Grants(Texas Grant):  Based on financial need and does not have to be repaid.  A student must apply for this each year he/she is in school.

·         Institutional Scholarships:  May be departmental, academic, or athletic.  A student should check with the high school counselor or with the college as to available scholarships for incoming freshmen.

·         College work-study: Based on financial need.  A student must apply for financial assistance and qualify for most of these jobs offered by the colleges.

·         Loans:  Based on financial need and type of loan.  The amount depends on extent of financial need of the student.  Must be repaid.
