The Task

Since space travel is dangerous work, astronauts travel in crews. You will choose one of 4 roles assigned to your crew.  Each role is important for the success of your team and delivery of the team’s payload.

NAVIGATOR:  Determines how the crew will reach the space and the I.S.S. by way of the Shuttle Transport System

MISSION DIRECTOR: Determines astronaut assignments and responsibilities for STS missions

SPACE STATION MANAGER: Determines what living conditions are like on the I.S.S.

EMU SPECIALIST: Determines equipment needed for a successful space walk

In order to complete your assigned task, you will need to research each objective listed in your role description. Remember to be thorough and include plenty of specific details. Once each team member’s task is complete, meet together as a group to write the STS report. Each real life NASA crew designs a mission patch that symbolizes their specific mission. Together, your crew will design a mission patch. BE CREATIVE and IMAGINATIVE as you create the design. You will find more information about each role and possible web sites with useful information on the process page. Additional information can be obtained by using more than one search engine and web site. Good luck on your mission! BLAST OFF to begin your journey. (click to continue to the process page)
